I loved the history of photography course I took in college. One of the most memorable things that came from that is how one invention had a ripple effect for years to come. The camera obscura, became the camera that became film that created the digital visual world we live in today.
I don’t know if most people think about that, but I do. Things we create can affect lives. Design works that way too.
Whether it’s graphic design, web design or logo design, it’s another form of communication that has been developed over years. The world would be pretty boring if everything was just white text like a word document. In nature, flowers are not all the same even if they are in the same flowerbed. Each leaf of a tree is individual. No snowflake looks like another.
Design is representational. And it can be used as a voice for the unique person, business or campaign it represents.
Case Study: How Can Design Represent You?
I worked on this campaign for BIAA (Brain Injury Associations of America) under Ratkaj Designs.
We had to create a design for their ‘My Brain Injury Journey’ campaign. The brief for the design was about representing the very personal journey for someone with a brain injury. One of the things that stood out to me the most was the idea that no one person’s injury and path is going to be the same.
That message is showcased in the final concept and campaign. From the typography to the icon and all the campaign pieces, it’s woven throughout to communicate with those it interacts with. It’s impactful but not demeaning, it’s bold but fluid. Good design not only looks goods but it feels and communicates effectively.
Design should be made with a business’ mission, purpose, values and audience in mind. This campaign also ensured that the design was 508 compliant to make sure it’s inclusive and serving all the people it’s meant to reach. Which is what design is for.
It’s crafted to make an impact. It’s developed to tell a story.
